Hawthorn Football Club has secured the signature of young forward, Sam Butler, on a two-year contract extension. The 20-year-old’s new deal will keep him at the club until at least the end of 2025, following a successful debut season that saw him showcase his crumbing and goal-kicking abilities in just nine games.
Butler’s contract extension is a significant one for the club, with the talented young forward regarded as one of the most exciting prospects at Hawthorn. National Recruiting and List Manager, Mark McKenzie, spoke about the importance of securing Butler’s signature for the club.

“We’re thrilled to see Butsy sign on with the brown and gold. We believe he can provide some real excitement for Hawthorn fans in the years to come,” said McKenzie. “As far as young forwards go, Butsy has all the traits to develop into a top-line player – he has impressive speed and is a strong competitor.”
The news of Butler’s contract extension follows the recent commitment of fellow 2021 draftee, Josh Ward, to the club.

McKenzie spoke of the club’s commitment to its young players, saying “It’s pleasing that Butsy sees his future here at Hawthorn. He is another one of our core young Hawks that we believe can help deliver the success our members and supporters deserve.”
Hawthorn finished 13th on the AFL ladder in 2022, and have not finished in the top 8 since 2018.
