More info on Scott Cummings

Cummings had a mercurial career, notable for his exceptional performances in his debut seasons at each of his clubs. The former West Australian from Swan Districts showed a capacity to kick goals from his first appearance with the Bombers when he bagged eight, but his coach Kevin Sheedy kept moving him around. He played 10 or 12 games at centre half back in 1995, but Cummings was tactful in interviews, saying he didn’t think Kevin Sheedy had anything against him.

Allowed to settle in the goal square at Port, he showed strength and goal-sense and booted 70 goals for the year to top the club’s goalkicking. The returns were more modest in 1998 and he found himself traded to the Eagles, where he played finals football and won the Coleman Medal with 102 goals for the season. Cummings could see the funny side in most situations and even raised a giggle when he arrived at Port Adelaide at the same time as Scott Hodges. He joked that he sensed he would be in trouble when he discovered Hodges was the son-in-law of coach John Cahill!

Cummings struggled with form and injury in 2001 and again found himself being discarded before being selected by Collingwood in the pre-season draft. However, injuries flared again and Cummings retired at the end of the 2002 season.
