Im just super weirded out that ParapMarkets seems to think that there are balloons in orbit at 45kms up.

At that altitude you're still in the atmosphere, and only halfway to the Karman line (which is 100kms up). Seeing as you're still in atmosphere, reaching the speeds of nearly 8 kms per second (Mach 30) to sustain an orbit are literally impossible for any existing terrestrial aircraft or spacecraft in atmosphere.

And even if you could somehow propel yourself that fast to sustain an orbit at that altitude and in atmosphere, you'd run out of fuel pretty quickly.

Of course, a high-altitude balloon could simply float around up in the upper atmosphere (and below the Karman line) for a short period of time (usually measured in hours), before crashing.

But why bother? Balloons are cheaper than satellites for sure, but the equipment you'd want to put on them (GPS, communication equipment etc) sure as s**t is not cheap and having your multimillion dollar high altitude balloons repeatedly crash hours after launching them would be financially stupid, but would also be pretty quickly noticed by literally everyone on the planet.

Surely it makes more financial and practical sense to just... put them on rockets, and launch them into actual orbit.

Well I’m not sure they can be launched from the nose of rockets, maybe they can. I think there is compelling evidence that there are a lot of satellites that are launched by a balloon that can get up to 180,000 feet and maybe higher. These are not floating above the Karman line unaided

If there is a comprehensive balloon satellite launching program that is successfully launching many satellites, I have to ask myself why bother with the more expensive rocket when helium will do the trick.

NASA does spend an insane amount of money on helium.

I think the motivation is $. That and the continued overstatement of our space travel capabilities (which also gets more $).

There's no possible way any object launched by a balloon at 180,000 feet can then achieve escape velocity to reach lower earth orbit (3-500kms). 180,000 feet is useless as far as GPS coverage goes, way too low.

A balloon obviously wont function in the vacuum of space, and due to how thin the atmosphere is at altitude, cant even get within 50kms of the border between the atmosphere and space.

And if there were balloons flying around at 45kms, we could see them (like we spotted those Chinese ones floating over the USA).

It's just... weird.
