Hi Footy fans...

We're now into the second half of the 2021 SANFL Premiership Season. This is now about the time when the underdogs make their move on the five. It's not unheard of for a last ditch run to reap some rewards, ask Norwood of 1984. They won seven of their last eight games to finish fifth and win the title. More recently, look at the Bulldogs of 2015. Granted they didn't take out the premiership that year, but made a decent run in the last third of the year. They won six of the last eight games to scrape into the five, then proceeded to dump both of the previous season's grand finalists before being stopped by the eventual premier in West Adelaide. The Roosters are on the outer, but only just. Fifth spot is well within their reach and are the most probable to snatch a berth by season's end. Those below them are in the unenviable position of having to make quite an impression on the top five sides and one of those would get their chance to make that impression in one of just two matches scheduled this weekend, which marked the conclusion of the rolling club byes that started back in Round 10. Eight rounds to go, folks!

Welcome to the Round 11 edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up.

As stated above, there were only a couple of games this week, with six teams observing byes. There was one Saturday game, so we're off to the X-Convenience Oval in Elizabeth for the Bulldogs clash with the Bloods. It was back in Round 5 that the Bloods prevailed at Richmond by four goals, the Bulldogs' opening half was just a waste as they scored eight goals to six but then seemed punch drunk in the second where they only managed 11 behinds to the Bloods' seven majors. Last weekend both sides were on their bye, but were both losers from the previous weekend with the Dogs going down to the reigning premiers, while the Bloods pushed the Panthers but couldn't find a last minute winner. The goal-kicking yips struck the Dogs early on, but the Bloods' own wayward kicking would see them only two goals up at quarter-time with the board reading 2.4 to four behinds. But the tables soon turned in the second quarter as the Dogs rammed through 6.3 to the Bloods' 1.3 and took over the lead by the long break. At half-time, Centrals were ahead by three goals. When play resumed, the Bulldogs controlled the opening 13 minutes and had stretched their lead to 32 points with their 2.2. But that would be back down to the half-time deficit by the three quarter-time siren, the Bloods actually cutting the gap back to just two goals early into time-on in that third quarter with their answering 3.2. One last goal before the final change to the Doggies put that back to the 18-point gap from earlier. The final term was reduced to an arm-wrestle, the home side forced to defend with whatever they had left. The visitors scored the first major after three minutes to given them some hope, but after a behind each over the ensuing 15 minutes it was a goal in extra time of the last term that sealed the deal for the Dogs as they won their third game of the year by 18 points. Nick Gillard kicked five goals, but for the stats alone with was Matt Neagle who was best for Centrals with 23 disposals, 11 marks and three tackles. For the Bloods, with 35 disposals it was Elliot Dunkin who was Westies' best.

The second match for the weekend takes us out to the Alberton Oval for some Sunday afternoon action, with the Magpies taking on the Double Blues. Amazingly, these two haven't locked horns already this year. So you have to go back two seasons to 2019 for their last encounters, which were both Port victories. In Round 9 at the Maggies' nest, Port overcame an inaccuracy-riddled opening quarter to win by 20 points, then in the boggy and sodden conditions of Unley in Round 17, the 'Pies again triumphed by 15 points. The two sides kicked a combined 10 goals from 33 scores on the muddy deck. Both sides were dealt losses last week, while the Blues went down to the Crows by 10 points, the Magpies were the victim of retribution at the hands of the Eagles at Woodville and went down by 68 points. Port were first to hit the goals column on the scoreboard, but at the quarter-time siren that board would show the Blues as being in the lead by 14 points after they scored 4.3 to 2.1. The Magpies accuracy on goals didn't help their cause in the second term, sending a swag of chances wide of the mark as Sturt increased their advantage to 28 points going into the half-time break after scoring four goals without a miss to Port's 1.4. The Blues were only out-classed in the ruck, everything else was in their favour. They had over 30 more marks, they pretty much matched Port's pressure on the body in the tackle count and were deep into their attacking zone more often. The Magpies cut the gap back to 16 points in the opening seven minutes with their 2.1 to one behind, but a run of four goals in eight minutes put the visitors back on track. By three quarter-time, the Blues' 4.2 to 3.1 still had them ahead by 35 points going into the final change. A goal to the home side in the first minute was just a tease as the Blues really didn't have much to worry about in the final term, but a percentage-boosting hammering didn't happen as their accuracy on goal went astray. They scored 2.2 to 1.2 to finish off, winning by 41 points in the end. Abe Davis was the Blues' best afield, with 24 disposals and eight tackles. For the Magpies, it was Sam Mayes with 27 disposals, five marks and 13 tackles.

CROWEATER KIDS KICK OFF NATIONALS WITH WIN
There has been a restructuring of the AFL NAB National Championships with the two competitions going to an U-17 and U-19 format, with South Australia getting off to a winning start in the former with their opening round win against Western Australia at Hisense Stadium on Sunday. The Sandgropers wasted a bunch of opportunities in the opening quarter, scoring four behinds as the Croweaters kicked 3.2 to lead by 16 points at the first change. That was cut back to just nine points by half-time, WA holding the home side to 1.2 but still spurned some of their own chances to score 2.3. The struggle for majors was very real in the third quarter as both sides scored two goals each, the gap still just two kicks with a pair of SA misses stretching their lead to 11 points going into the final change. The West Aussies did breakthrough to take over the lead 15 minutes into the last quarter, but after a SA goal and a costly last gasp missed shot by the visitors it was the hosts that prevailed by three points. In the goals, South Adelaide's Nick Delean scored three majors, but the eye-catcher was SA skipper Adam D'Aloia who racked up 30 disposals and laid the tackle that ensured victory. The action now heads to Queensland's Gold Coast in early July, with games against Victoria Metro (6/7) and Victoria Country (9/7). As for the U-18's, that starts late next month with a home game against the Allies on July 24.

South Australia 8.8 (56) def. Western Australia 7.11 (53)
