I know Jordon also coached in the Teal Cup but I don't have his overall record for these games. Not sure how long he coached in this competition but unfortunately probably not enough games to reach a career tally of 1000.

And then spent his summerss - s)wicket-keeping for Victoria!

Ray came from the VFA club Coburg and never played VFL footy. He was a chuncky rover a bit slow for VFL at the time (1950s - 60s) but in the Leigh Mathews mould = took no prisioners.

I think he may have made reserve wicket keeper for Australia as well.

Top bloke fabulous at sportsmans nights just full of great stories about footy and cricket.

I think he may have made reserve wicket keeper for Australia as well.

He went to South Africa as our No 2 keeper in 1969/70 (behind Brian taber). Taber had lost his form, and we got smashed. Although Jordan was next in line, he was 32, and the selectors decided to basically do a youth push, and chose Rod Marsh.

The above posts are a good enough reason to lapse briefly into cricket and post some extra stats relating to Slug's sporting prowess. Here are his figures in most of his major cricket matches.

Just for those unfamiliar with cricket abbreviations:

Ct= catches, st= stumpings)

Jordon played senior district cricket for Richmond, Carlton and Fitzroy. His second class tour game was a one day game against Ceylon Board XI on the 1969-70 tour.

Getting back to football, as stated in Paul Hogan's excellent book about Richmond, "The Tigers of Old", as a player Jordon played 98 games for Coburg between 1957 and 1962, kicking 169 goals and winning their Best and Fairest in 1959, 1961 and 1962. He was their captain in 1961 and 1962 and also represented the VFA.

And of course he was one of the commentators on the day John Bourke lost it in the reserves and received a 10 year ban for getting physical with umpire Phil Waight.

Recently purchased a 1974 Australian Cricket Yearbook off e-Bay. On pages 13 and 14, New Zealand skipper Bev Congdon wrote an article about his experiences on the 1973-74 tour of Australia. At the end, having summed up his views on the tour, Congdon concludes his article thus:

One final comment: my "number one" prize for most ignorant cricket writer spanning my 13 years of first class cricket to Ray Jordon - Victoria.

Our loss is Victoria's problem.

Would love to know exactly what it was Slug wrote that caused Congdon to respond in this way. When he states "our loss" it makes it sound as though Jordon had some connection to New Zealand cricket.

I actully saw Ray Jordan play for Coburg a few times.

He was a nuggety type pretty slow as a rover but make up for that by being very agressive and tough - a bit like Kevin Sheedy who also came from the VFA ( Prahran) and represented the VFA in the same match as Jordan and from memory they were both about 19 at the time.

I know Jordon also coached in the Teal Cup but I don't have his overall record for these games. Not sure how long he coached in this competition but unfortunately probably not enough games to reach a career tally of 1000.

Have been doing some Slug research for australianfootball.com. I know that he was coaching Victoria in the Teal Cup as early as 1981, and he coached each year after that right up until 1991, which was his last year coaching in that competition (1989–1991 was for Vic Country as the state had split by this stage).

It is likely that Victoria played between 3 and 4 games each carnival, which would push him mighty close to that 1000-game mark. I do plan to research Teal Cup scores in future and get them up online eventually.

Does anyone know definitively if Jordon coached Victoria any earlier than 1981? 1978–1980 is a bit of an online black hole for Victorian team photos or coaching staff details.

Thanks!
