Jumper Number: 34

Height: 189 cm

Weight: 89 kg

D.O.B: 06/12/1988

Recruited from: North Adelaide Football Club/Saint Ignatius College/Walkerville Football Club

Honours: SA U18 Side 2006, North Adelaide Most Promising Player 2007

Greg was drafted to the Adelaide Football Club with it's last pick in the 2006 rookie draft. He was allowed to slip to the rookie draft as he played most of his 2006 football at St. Ignatius College due to his schoolwork commitments and his only real showing under the eye of most AFL scouts was at the All Australian carnival where he had the unpleasant experience of standing Tom Hawkins where he was not impressive.

However after impressing all year on the track and at North Adelaide where he was consistently holding down key position defence spots in the seniors by the end of the year he became the only rookie to be retained or elevated. His year for North was topped off through selection in their unsuccessful Grand Final effort ahead of fellow Crows rookie, the more experienced Andrew McIntyre.

Greg is considered too short to hold down key positions at AFL level but has notable pace, fitness, skills and hardness at the football. This has led to speculation that at AFL level Greg could play anywhere from the Nathan Basset/Jason Torney replacement role to even having a tagging role replacing Robert Shirley. Due to all these atributes Greg has an exciting future at the club.

On a side note he is also the son of my Year 4 teacher, a fact that only twigged with me the other day! Another side note, Gallman is also quite the scholar, achieving a Merit certificate in Year 12 PE last year.

Teen talent to burn

ANDREW CAPEL

ONE is a Nathan van Berlo wannabe who is viewed as the long-term replacement for dumped Jason Torney.
The other is an exciting, raw-boned teenager who is modelling his game on Brisbane matchwinner Jonathan Brown.
Between them, the Crows hope that in rebounding defender Greg Gallman and key forward Taylor Walker they have found two important pieces in their list replenishment.
"You're never quite sure how young players will develop but these two have got plenty of talent and that's a fair start," Adelaide football operations manager John Reid said of the youngsters, who grew up barracking for the Crows.
Gallman, promoted from the rookie list, is in the Torney mould.
Strong, hard-at-it and a powerful runner, the 18-year-old played in North Adelaide's grand final side this season and is a natural athlete.
He yesterday was a standout runner as the Crows' first-to-fourth-year players began pre-season training with an arduous two-hour session in 30-degree heat at Max Basheer Reserve.
"Fitness is definitely something that I've tried to make a strength of mine," 187cm Gallman said, sweat still dripping from his face. "If you can come back to training and the coaches see you're running first, second or third it does put your name straight in front of them. I guess it's a matter of ticking all the boxes."
Highly-motivated Gallman - who has been given big wraps by retired Crows champion defender Ben Hart who helped tutor him at the Roosters - says he aspires to be like van Berlo at training and be a leader who "consistently pushes the rest of the group".
"The Crows want to develop me as a running player, so I've put a fair bit of work into that and being able to push through games with my aerobic capacity," said Gallman, who believes he can also be used as a pinch-hitting midfielder.
While Gallman, who has played 11 SANFL games, is a chance to play AFL football next season, project player Walker probably isn't.
At 17 and still building his body, the 192cm, strong-marking forward will take time to develop in the SANFL. But he has talent to burn and could eventually be the damaging centre half-forward the Crows have been crying out for.
The club's first NSW scholarship player, Walker earned promotion to the senior list after dominating against men in this year's Broken Hill Football League finals.
He bagged seven goals for North Broken Hill in both the preliminary and grand finals, leading the Bulldogs to the flag.
"It was good to perform well in those games but the main thing was that we won the premiership," the modest teenager said.
Walker, who believes he still has another 3 or 4cm of growth in him, has a history of performing in big games, having kicked five goals for NSW/ACT against the Northern Territory in this year's national under-18 championships and making the division two All-Australian team. "He's a really young player who is a natural forward with nice size about him," Reid said.
"He's got a lot of developing to do but he's got a good pair of hands and he's a good kick so we thought the sooner we got him into our system the better."
Walker, who has deferred year 12 studies to concentrate on his football, was given a rude awakening yesterday.
"At Broken Hill we only trained twice a week and that just involved a bit of running and a bit of skill work," he said. "It didn't quite prepare me for this."

The boy certainly knows who to model himself on!

Re: #45 - Greg Gallman

With a bit of development a player like him would be a priceless addition to the side. He's that perfect utility size, with the tank and pace to do a lot in the midfield. Good prospect.

Re: #45 - Greg Gallman

Definitely sounds like a keeper, great attitude by the sounds, great fitness hopefully can come up and replace Shirley as our number one tagger.

Agree. I must admit that I am getting more and more excited about this kid. Hopefully he will continue our fine rookie tradition.:thumbsu:

And the third of our 'recruits' so far this year, with Walker and Symes, that are dedicated club men, and who grew up barricking for the Crows
This is what we need more of, people who love the club. Same with James Sellar last year (watch him come on this year;))

Gallman looks great from these early signs

Not hot shot recruits from victoria who think its their god given right to play AFL, blokes who you would think would work their arses off to make it into the side and make a difference, whilst still being able to play.

Re: #45 - Greg Gallman

And ding ding ding I win!

Ben Hart has given his #34 number to Gallman.

Get on the bandwagon quickly people!

Hart passes on no.34
11:00 AM Wed 5 December, 2007 | Back
for afc.com.au
Ben Hart has handed on his old No 34 guernsey to upgraded Crows rookie Greg Gallman.

Hart, who wore the number for 16 seasons and 311 AFL games for Adelaide and is now an assistant coach at the Club, asked for his ‘retired’ jumper to be reactivated and then chose to offer it to Gallman.

“It was a nice gesture from the Club to retire the jumper last year but now I think it would be good to pass it on to one of the younger players,” said Hart, a two-time club champion and dual premiership player.

“I have seen a fair bit of Greg at North Adelaide and I believe he has a promising future, so hopefully he gets as much enjoyment from playing in the No 34 jumper as I did.”

Gallman, assigned No 45 this year in his first season on the rookie list, said he was proud to have been offered Hart’s jumper.

“I’ve always admired Ben,” he said. “He is a legend at this Club and I was also lucky enough to play alongside him at North this year.”

Adelaide also has confirmed that the No 32 jumper worn by retired captain Mark Ricciuto will be ‘rested’ for at least the 2008 season.

Defensive dreams

AFTER spending most of 2008 on the sidelines, Adelaide defender Greg Gallman believes his time is now.

Gallman, 20, was promoted to the Crows’ senior list at the end of season 2007, having started his career as a rookie, and was deemed so promising he received former club legend and current-day defensive coach Ben Hart’s number 34 guernsey.

But soon after reaching the heights of the primary list, Gallman’s rollercoaster AFL ride saw him plummet back into uncertainty.

The North Adelaide junior was diagnosed with an infected foot during the pre-season after his entire leg mysteriously swelled up, and his bad luck carried into the season-proper.

A series of knee injuries limited him to just nine league games with the Roosters and put his future at AFL level in jeopardy.

“I wanted to be out there training on the track and performing for the coaches, but I was on the sidelines recovering from injury,” Gallman said.

“I got back from the infected foot, did a knee, came back and then did the other knee, so I was sort of only getting through half a game. It was really frustrating because one instant you’re fine, but in the next, you’re not.

“They were all collision-type injuries, which you can’t prevent. You can learn how to fall, but when someone falls on you there’s not much you can do about it.”

During the rehabilitation for his third knee injury Gallman started to feel insecure about his place in the squad for 2009 and put an action plan into place.

“I had quite a few talks with [development manager] Alan Stewart just about where I was at in regards to my season and the list management and he challenged me a few times,” Gallman said.

“He sort of put it to me pretty bluntly what I had to do and I set a few goals for myself, to get back into the league side and play good football at North Adelaide and also to work on a few things the club asked me to do.

“The coaches were happy with how I was playing, but they wanted me, rather than just playing a solid game and beating my opponent, to start getting the ball and getting into the best players and that was something I started to do, especially in the last half a dozen games.

“I went into the off-season unsure of what was happening, but I was happy that in the last month or two, I had put as much into staying on the list as I could.

“Fortunately, a couple of things went my way and the club decided to keep me.”

Gallman, who finished second behind fitness freak Nathan van Berlo in the club’s first 3km time trial of the summer, has been instructed to be ‘more selfish’ in his play and to use his incredible aerobic capacity to advantage.

He’s hopeful that adding this new dimension to his game will help him secure one of the two spots left vacant by former defensive duo Nathan Bassett and Kris Massie.

“It’s been a tough defence to crack into for the last few years because they’ve all been such amazing players, but now seeing those spots I’ve definitely said, ‘It’s my time to have a crack at it’,” Gallman said.

“I’m not going to hold anything back in regards to that. It’s pre-Christmas at the moment and there’s a long way to go, but at the end of it in terms of the goals I’ve set, there’s a trial game in Darwin to aim for and then round one of the NAB Cup is against Geelong, so you’re putting yourself against the best.

“That’s the long-term aim and hopefully all the goals I’ve set for the short-term are going to get me there.”

ADELAIDE defender Greg Gallman - a contender to fill spots vacated by retired Nathan Bassett and delisted Kris Massie - will miss the start of the premiership season after X-rays confirmed he has broken a collarbone.
Gallman arrived home from Darwin in Sunday, three days ahead of his teammates, with his left arm in a sling after being crunched in the final quarter of Saturday's nine-goal trial-match defeat by the Indigenous All-Stars.

X-rays at a Darwin hospital on Saturday night revealed the fracture, ruling Gallman out for eight to 10 weeks.

Gallman, who flew back to Adelaide with club officials, will be assessed by a specialist today and may require surgery.

He is expected to miss the first month of the AFL premiership season.

The injury is a bitter blow to the hard-running, 20-year-old defender, who is yet to play an AFL game.

His setback comes just days after Crows defensive coach Ben Hart said that Gallman was one of the chief contenders to replace Bassett and Massie in the back half.

"Greg Gallman and Aaron Kite have stepped up this pre-season from last year," Hart said last week.

"They have been performing really well in the (defensive) roles we want from them, so we're hoping that with continual exposure to those areas they'll get better and better and be able to fill those positions for us."

Gallman, from North Adelaide, will now have his work cut out to force his way into the side.

Crows coach Neil Craig described Gallman's injury as "a real negative for him and a negative for us".

"We don't want broken collarbones and that sort of thing but as soon as you run out you put yourself at risk (but) a lot more positive stuff has come out of it (the match)."

Craig said the trial showed his side had "some work to do" ahead of its first NAB Cup clash against powerful Geelong on February 21.

"We take that and move forward ... I think our structures fell apart with their (All-Stars) pressure," Craig said.

"We're not totally ingrained yet with a lot of the stuff we've done in pre-season. That's a disappointment but you need to play in these sort of games to find that out."

Second-year midfielder Patrick Dangerfield suffered slight concussion after a collision with All-Stars opponent but Crows teammate Graham Johncock but he will not miss any matches.

Young forward Taylor Walker was a late withdrawal from the game because of quad soreness.

Most of the Crows squad will stay in Darwin until Wednesday to embark on a couple of fishing trips planned by All-Stars captain Andrew McLeod.

hmm not good for Greg

Okay the following is pure rumour and I cannot confirm, however I have heard Adelaide are considering re-drafting Gallman, likely on the rookie list.

My question is, is this even possible? And has anyone else heard anything in regards to Gallman?

It wouldn't be too surprising, since the club has always rated him.

I'd probably rather we just had a try at another kid personally, but I guess if our list of preferred players in the draft runs out before our rookie picks does I guess we may as well. After all, we've invested enough time and resources into him, it would be a pity if we cut him off right before he was (finally) about to do something worthwhile.
