Eagleton's rise to prominence was remarkably quick as in 1996 he was plodding along in West Adelaide's reserves. His precision passing and non-stop running as a rover/half forward attracted attention and he soon showed he had no trouble adjusting to the higher tempo. He began his football with Happy Valley in the Southern Football League - an Adelaide suburban competition. After a year with West Adelaide's under 17s, he was advanced into the seconds and played just one game in the seniors before Port secured him in its initial squad.
He admitted to some uncertainty in terms of confidence at first, but he soon found his feet. He was seen as one of Port's brightest young hopefuls at the start of the year, having just represented Australia with distinction in the International Rules series in Ireland. He was prominent in the Ansett Cup competition, but his form fell away quickly and he was dropped just a month into the season.
In the 1999 Round 15 game against Essendon he dramatically collapsed with what proved to be an unusual heart condition. He recovered quickly and returned after three weeks to play out the remaining five games, including Port's first AFL finals appearance.
The departure of Eagleton from Port Adelaide, traded to the Western Bulldogs, was one of the major surprises of the trade period at the end of the 1999 season.
