Teamwork is Key in Lions' Engine Room Shake Up

Reliable wing Jade Ellenger has also worked on her "inside" game during the pre-season, hopeful of providing coach Craig Starcevich an alternate option as part of the rotation.

Ellenger, who has taken 20 seconds off her 2km time trial best, said she was excited to see how the new core would gel.

"It allows people to step up, and also for us to try something new," she said.

"We obviously had such a great midfield, but when there were games when 'Batesy' was getting tagged, we were able to swap very quickly and change it around.

"I think the group is very adaptable and I think there shouldn't be a hole there, absolutely not."

An Extra Big Dance for Ellenger

Jade Ellenger will run out in Sunday’s 2023 AFLW Grand Final for her 50th appearance in a Brisbane Lions guernsey and is no stranger to the big stage.

A 2021 premiership player and mainstay in senior coach Craig Starcevich’s side, Ellenger celebrated her 25th game milestone at the MCG in the Lions Preliminary Final against Melbourne in 2022.

A key cog in the Lions charge toward this season’s Grand Final, Ellenger is known amongst the playing group for her energy both on and off the field.

Many of the Lions playing group have grown up playing junior football together, but for Ellenger’s teammate and housemate, Ellie Hampson this milestone is a special one.

“She has taken her game to the next level this year, she is both a leader on and off the field and has played an enormous role in our success this year,” Hampson said.

“We’ve played a lot of football together through junior representative teams and now at the AFLW level.

“She has been an enormous part of my journey as not only a footballer but a person and to see her run out on Sunday playing her 50th game is amazing.”

Drafted in 2019, the Brisbane Lions Academy graduate didn’t cement her place in the Lions’ lineup until the 2021 season.

Grabbing hold of the opportunity with both hands, Ellenger provides plenty of run on the wing and the versatility to head down back or run up for goal.

Another Lion having a tremendous year, the midfielder has averaged 15 disposals and 3.5 tackles per outing in 2023.

Ellenger produced an eye-catching performance in the 2022 Grand Final rematch against the Demons with 22 touches, six marks and 536 metres gained.

IT WAS the tough call that set the tone for Brisbane's second flag, and demonstrated why the Lions are held in such high regard across the AFLW competition.
With Brisbane's men's team playing in the Grand Final against Collingwood and the women fixtured to play the following day, the AFLW side spent the last weekend of September in Melbourne.
When the team for the AFLW round six match against Collingwood was released the following week, Jade Ellenger and Poppy Boltz were surprise omissions due to disciplinary reasons.
At the time, coach Craig Starcevich was reluctant to throw the pair under the bus by detailing just what had transpired, instead rather cryptically saying a "lack of sleep" was involved.
It was a low point in a year mostly full of highs for Ellenger, who at 23, had her best season to date.

In the frantic minutes following the Grand Final, Ellenger acknowledged the difficult moment, but was keen to focus on the team-wide positives.
"The season has been unreal. It's been a rollercoaster, and I think that's why it means the most now. It's been a rollercoaster for so many reasons. It's taken all of us to get here. I was in tears as soon as the siren went. It meant a lot," Ellenger told AFL.com.au after the premiership win.
"Personally, [the dropping] sucked. As a group, we've said that it's probably one of the best things that has happened for us.
"It really stamped our standards, and it opened the door for all these honest conversations as well. It was a great learning experience.
"Not that it'll happen again, but I'm glad for the experience now, because we've come out on top."

...

"It means the most, this one. Backs against the wall all year, probably the last 12 months. To come out on top today – that game epitomised Lions footy," Ellenger said.
"I feel like we just love each other so much that we'll go down fighting. If you're going to beat us, you're going to have to beat all of us, not just one. We do it for each other.
"We're very lucky in this group. You just can't keep a good horse down. They kick us to the stands, and we're like, 'we're coming back'."

Ellenger established herself as a dangerous winger this year – averaging a career-high 14.6 disposals, up from 11.3 last season – but has also had to move into defence when required.

It was a trigger the Brisbane coaching staff pulled on Sunday, throwing Bre Koenen into the midfield to look after Jas Garner and swinging Ellenger to the backline.

"I'm loving the mix, I honestly feel I'll go wherever they throw me, which is great. I love it, and I love they trust me to play in different positions as well," Ellenger said.

"They wanted to throw Bre in [the midfield], so they needed me in defence, so it was like, here we go again. But I honestly don't mind it, I'll do either, and I feel safe in either position.

"Who knows where I'll be next season, watch this space."

Brisbane Lions AFLW premiership players Belle Dawes, Jade Ellenger and Tahlia Hickie have all committed to the Club until 2026 and beyond.

The trio all signed contract extensions with Dawes and Ellenger committing for two more years and Hickie for three.
Ellenger, who played a number of different roles last season including coming off halfback also spread the love for her teammates and coaching staff.

“I couldn’t think if anything better than being at this Club for another two seasons,” Ellenger said.

“Our group across the board, whether that’s players, coaching or support staff as the best in the competition.

“It has been well documented that many of us have grown up through the Academy, so I’m excited to keep pulling on the jumper.”
