At the end of 1965 both the Mountain District FA and the Yarra Valley FL had lost a number of clubs (Wandin, Yarra Glen, Olinda-Ferny Creek, Silvan, Ferntree Gully, Wantirna South) to the growing Eastern Districts FL. To overcome this the two Leagues decided to merge. This did result in the further loss of Upper Ferntree Gully, who didn't want to travel to the Yarra Valley, but did stabilise the district.

One of the moves that also occurred was that all Life Members of the previous competitions would continue in the new League. Looking at the AFLOE website there are now 183 Life Members recognised but due to some clerical errors in the early years of the new competition some of the original members were forgotten are no longer on the list.

Here are the Life Member lists of both the MDFA and YVFL to the end of 1965 which was published in the 1st Football Record for the MDYVFL on April 16 1966.

Allowing for various spelling inconsistencies E.Cary and R.McGuire, the only representatives from Yarra Glen and Powelltown respectively, from the YVFA/YVFL are not on the AFLOE list.

The former Mountain District association is missing more: E. J. Mattingley (Silvan/Monbulk), G.Clarkson, Don McKenzie (Monbulk/Belgrave), E.Russell (Gembrook?), Charlie Hackett (Ferny Creek), George E. 'Ned' Anderson (Monbulk), Cr. T. Dalziell (Emerald), E. Jenkins, J. Haag (Emerald) and G. Marke.

These 12 early League Life Membership recipients probably should be added onto the current AFLOE list.

Looking through some old newspapers on Trove and came across an interesting article that appeared in the Alexandra Times on August 30 1872.

This would be the earliest Football Club in Alexandra, which had just been formed and was looking for members to join and to draw up rules and organise some matches.

That means that football in Alexandra will turn 150 next year, which I am fairly sure makes them the oldest club in the Outer East League and the first to notch up this milestone.

Checking the Alexandra website it says that the club of today was formed in 1884 from records that they have got. That club was formed on April 13 1883 but as they were unable to arrange any matches during the 1883 season, the club does not count it as starting until 1884.

This report below is the Annual Report lodged for 1883 from the Alexandra and Yea Standard October 5 1883.
