did anyone see Hardwick in U18's, thought he looks a gun in the making. Flying under the radar. Snagged 10 in Tac earlier in the year aswell.

Nick o'Kearny with our second pick? Only thing holding us back from picking him I reckon is the fact we have a plethora of halfback small defenders.
Also if we pass on Wietering, K Collins or Riley Bonner is a must.
Ben Aisnworth is also worth a look in the second round, we seriously lack speed and goalkicking prowess up front, he would fit our needs and I reckon he could slip to 30-35.
Ainsworth not eligible for the draft until next year

-If O'kearney is going to make it, it's as a mid
- Collins, I highly doubt lasts to our second
-Bonner isn't a KPD
-as someone else said, Ainsworth is next year, if he was eligible this year, he'd go top 10 anyway

...everything else I agree with :)

bonner is 190cm i think?

When I say second pick i mean (hopefully) our second pick in the first round (hopefully in the 10-15 range).

And dayumm, didn't know Ainsworth was next year.

As I have been ignorant of most things non-Carlton for most of my football supporting life, can someone answer me this... When was the last time a KPD was picked up at no.1 in the draft and did he end up being one of the premier backmen in the league?

Of the current day players:
Alex Rance appears to be considered to be the best backman in the league at the moment (debatable I'm sure) and he went pick 18 in 2007.
Tom McDonald (???) pick 53, 2011.
Hurley seems to be the highest pick of the current decentish backmen... pick 5, 2008.
Easton Wood pick 43, 2007 (it could be just me but I don't really remember this guy doing anything particulalry flash before this year... Does M. Watson picked at 18 in 2010 get as much time to develop?)... and then there's...
Malceski, pick 64, 2002... has been a premier backman for a few years
Brian Lake was pick 71, 2001...
Harry Taylor was pick 17, 2007 but turned 18 in 2004...

Matthew Scarlett was pick 45 in 1997...

Looking at this obviously incomplete list, I'm seeing a trend... and it is what is always said about talls, they take a long time to develop... I suspect that it's a rare thing to be a decent backman before 25 years of age...

Can anyone add more to this story, or counter?

SOS was obviously a father/son and I don't know when he would have been drafted... he won Carlton's b&f in 1990 as a 23 y.o. and then again in 1996 as a 29 y.o... His best game was arguably the '95 Grand Final...

Darren Gaspar - Sydney Swans (1993). Injured his knee and was delisted at the end of 1996. Richmond came knocking in the PSD and the rest is history.

The type of players we should be looking at drafting will depend on our list changes. We need a key position defender, a key forward and we need to inject some midfield class and a small forward. Jacob Weitering, Josh Schache and Darcy Parish would be players that I would like at the club and we will be at the right end of the draft to have a realistic chance of landing one of these youngsters.

Jacob Weitering would be a great list fit if Schache was off the table. Would be totally ideal if Cam Giles turns out alright as well. Basically means that Giles will be able to play as that third tall intercept mark defender and Rowe your lockdown defender. Would be nice if we could have Fields and Giles as those third tall intercept marking defenders
I'm also warming to the idea of selecting Harry Mckay, moblie mid who is a ruckman size. Saw him play quite a bit as a junior with my little brother. He was a mid not a ruckman/ KPP when he was 14-15 yo but he is still able to play those roles well.

Rowe is a disaster.

If we end up with pick 3 and Brisbane and Gold Coast pick Weitering and Schache. We should pick Weideman he'll be a top 5 pick and the type of player we need. Francis is going to be HBF and we have enough of them. Parish will be a star but we need an A-grade spine to build around.

Brisbane are a joke atm so expect pick 2.

They played ok today just couldn't kick straight. Wouldn't mind having pick #2
There is very little chance they will take Weitering and he is my pefered option.
His leadership and scope for improvemeant are off the charts. IMO the best talent in this years draft.

Some people think that we need a key forward more ATM and that may be true.
But Jacob Weitering has the same kind of skill set as Jeremy Cameron did as a 17yo.
It would not surprise me to see him play at both ends of the ground to a very high standard.
Not many 17yo KPP would be a walk up start to any AFL side.
Pretty special talent just hope his in the navy blue come draft day.

If we miss out on Wietering and Schache then it's Francis for us.
Cripps and Francis roaming free will be a very valuable and potent combination going forward.

White played the role he was being groomed for this year which used to go to Gibbs under Rattens reign. He had to play KPD the past month with no consistent Jamison/Rowe appearances and Fields brought in to try and allow this structure to maintain. Jamison is underdone and Fields is raw. The last month we have still been doing better than expected. Melbourne just won so there is now 2 games between us and the next 3 teams plus 8%. Youd expect that limits us to the bottom 3 teams which is where (at this stage) the talent breaks between the high end crop (Schache, Weitering & Francis) and the rest pretty much guaranteeing us a KPP. If we arent going to be involved in the finals you may as well bottom out and get the best chance at top end talent so i for one am happy as possible that we arent picking up wins but staying in it and getting games into the kids. Its not ideal but at least we arent loitering around the middle of the ladder and i actually think there is plenty of talent on our list that with a more modern game plan we will be involved again sooner rather than later. Kreuzer back stringing games together and Giles next year will give us another kpd option. We get pick 1-3 and 19-21 instead of a no mans land pick of 8-12 as there is always a break of talent after the top 5 before the next level (of course there is talent later as has been proven every year but it becomes a bit more speculative, you are generally very safe percentage wise with picks in the top 5).

Jamison and Rowe will now have support next year of Fields, Jaksch and Giles so all of a sudden our kpd depth looks very good.
