With Warnock on the Long Term Injury list, and one of Kreuzer or Cloke to play as a forward to help out Fev, we're gonna have to take in one of Jacobs or Hampson for the start of the season, but which one?

Jacobs has been very impressive in the pre-season. His ruckwork has been good, his ground work has been outstanding for a big man where on many occasions he provided a link when we were coming out of defence.

Hampson on the other hand already has AFL experience, and is a faster more athletic ruckman. But despite all this has extremely poor skills, he drops marks easily and his disposal is forgettable.

So do we take Jacobs who is in form, or Hampson who has AFL experience?

Did you also see sauces kick from the backline last week straight to geelong players. He was under no real pressure at the time so still a little suspect for me.

Hammer the way he chased down the geelong player was amazing.
I think give a Hammer a real go at it if he doesnt deliver sauce can have a go.

Hampson will be the better AFL player in the long-term if he can iron out some of the creases in his game.

Jacobs is a safer option for the short term but doesn't have nearly the amount of upside that Hampson does.

For round 1 I'd have Hampson ahead, to play with Kreuzer and Cloke. Hampson gives us something different around the ground - has great speed and intensity and he could provide a spark at any moment. I'd like to see him playing out of the goal square with Fev, that would be quite a sight.

The match committee will obviously l want to win this game, so I think Jacobs might get the nod and give us a greater chance of getting first use of the ball.

The tap to Bentley after Jacobs beat McIntosh was pinpoint and the sort of tap Judd received from Cox.

Imagine Judd, Gibbs, Murphy and Walker on the end of that tap...

Cloke and Kreuzer are better forward options than Hampson at the moment.

We should select Hampson (or Warnock) when we were play a Brisbane or WCE who have at least two mobile and athletic rucks.

Jacobs, Cloke and Kreuzer might be the best match up for Pattison, Simmonds and Graham or Vickery.

The slow ruckman wasn't under pressure on the last line with some Cats in the area?

It was a poor kick, yet Jacobs couldn't rush it through for a point and had to bring the ball back into play under the NAB cup rules.

I'm not sure about that rule change.

It has the potential to eliminate the kick in to a contest after a rushed point and speed up the game even further.

If the game goes further down the path of being a game of keepings off, the players will start wearing loose soccer or basketball shorts because tackling and one on one contests will be non-existant.

Honestly......i would prefer Hammer in the team over Jacobs

i wasnt sold by Jacobs during the first 2 Nab cup games......havent seen the Cats game yet

what i found most concerning is Jacobs inability to try to jump at the centre bounces.......and using the run around tactic which was Acklands method.

for Hammer, you really notice he is a confidence player.....but its hard for him especially when he doesnt start on the ground most weeks and therefore its hard for him to pick up the speed of the game when he is put on, not to mention doesnt really get a consistently good run on consecutive games

what i found which was great by ratts and co was during the hawks, Jacobs was doing most the ruck duties against renouf. When Renouf was replaced Hammer came on.....and you could see that with the extra strength he had over the Hawks rookie ruckman, he started to shine around the ground in throw ins and gain confidence.

Ok Hammers skills are not great but i am willing for him to get a good 10 games straight in the seniors and he will no doubt get cleaner with disposals as well as improve in the ruck contests!!

I personally think the onballer in blue should get a free kick for holding the jumper.

Jacobs 50%
Hampson 50%

it's dead even!

agree 100%. I feel even though Hampson has AFL games under his belt, that Jacobs is the safer option. Jacobs is the better all round player, Hampson is still only an athlete... although in the future may prove to be something.

Pick a ruckman based on their ruckwork. Doesn't matter how athletic or fast a ruckman is if there is a bloke at the club who rucks better then pick them. A good ruckman is very underrated and you will notice every premership side has had a good tap ruckman. A ruckman determins the structure of the whole field and how well it works.

Jacobs well in front. Hampson to develope as a forward in the VFL.

As BlueYoss said, Jacobs just for the hitouts.

I'm leaning towards this as well. I think the Bunbury game will settle who will ruck round 1 with Kreuzer.

Does anyone else feel slightly concerned we are giving a 19 year old first ruck? And a 20 year old 2nd ruck? I don't want them to turn into Josh Frasers.

I went jacobs but only just, he is a fellow ranga which tips him over the edge.

He is also a bigger lump of a man than hamma atm and we already have the mobile ruck in kreuzer. Breaking even with McIntosh (a very good ruck imo) is also an impressive attribute.

Hamma should be miles infront next year however,

I'll take a plodder that knows where to run over an athlete that knows how to run.

Jacobs looks the goods to me. A good size, not pushed around in the rucking contests too much, and lays the ball down nicely.

Jacobs = J Madden?

As for Hammers, I heard his pace mentioned a couple of times, and given that I constantly worry about our backline, wonder if he'd be an option on a gorilla forward, eg Roughead.

It'd be nice to think we have 3-4 ruck options with at least 2 of them able to rotate through KPs.

When everyone was talking about the value of getting Warnock to Carlton the things that kept getting mentioned was how badly we've been smashed in the ruck contests for the last few years.

We don't seem to get smashed in the ruck contests with the big Yorke Peninsula ginger in there, so let's go with him. Jacobs' ability to contribute right now is of more value than some hypothetical/potential contribution that hammer might make some time down the track.

Come to think of it, Hammer hasn't made one significant contribution in a game that I can remember. He may have kicked 2 goals in a game once. Jacobs has broken even with some decent, established ruckmen.

Jacobs shows he can hold his own in the ruck. Even if he don't get the taps to the players, he provided a contest and his big body is ideal in the center for us.

I think we all know that Hammer has the potential to be much better......but at this stage he is not, that being the case we should play Sauce first up against the tiges....although were Hammer to rip it up at training I would be happy to review this opinion.

Hampson has superstar potential. Want to see him played forward more this year. Taller, faster and a better athlete than Franklin. When he gets it together he'll be awesome. :)

You seriously have to be joking making Hampson comparisions to Franklin who is in the top five players going round, athletic ability is one thing but seriously putting it together as a footballer is another, whilst Hampson does have some talent making comparisons to Franklin is way over the top.

Jacobs has shown enough to deserve a opportunity in the early games, whilst Hampson is more athletic Jacobs seems stronger in terms of competing in the ruck contests.

Jacobs is a country mile ahead of Hampson...Jacobs has shown plenty during the NAB cup, Hampson had his chances last week and cant even hold a mark...Plenty of pace, should be back playing Basketball...

Hampson is another irish experiment to be delisted at the end of the year!
Setanta and Hampson will make way for some decent talent at years end...
