Aussie Lonie new coach for Lancs

Lancashire have named the replacement for Mike Watkinson to coach Lancashire for the upcoming seasons. Australian born Michael Lonie has got the nod after several days looking for the perfect option. Lonie has a great knowledge in the sport aswell as his credentials which are essentially the key to his selection as the head of one of the favourites to take out the championship.

Lonie was pleased to be appointed the new role, "It's a great honour for myself in getting the gig, and am looking forward to the season. "I have a good connection with the side, and hopefully it is vice versa" he said.

Captain Mark Chilton was also pleased about the decision, "There was no better man and I'm glad he is on board. He knows all the guys and gives them all alot of respect, and we have done the same. "It's good to have a coach who can interact as well as he does (with the group)". Chilton was at the press conference when the decision was made publically.

2006 Squad Released, Sutton healthy fill-in

Lancashire have made limited changes to the squad over the off-season, with only Stephen Crook and Tim Rees told to move on, while Warren Hegg made a long awaited retirement. But with Hegg's absence, boom recruit Luke Sutton will fill the void left, perfectly. Sutton, who capatained Derbyshire in the past two seasons has arrived at the Lancs on a higher salary.

Australian Brad Hodge will once again be the overseas player at the Lancs, while Marcus North, also an Aussie, will also be a kolpak player.

County Championship (Div 1) - Lancashire vs Hampshire at Old Trafford

18 April 2006
Day 1 - Captains knock puts Lancs in charge

A batting pitch, their was no hesitation to decide to bat first on the home turf by Mark Chilton, who then showed a display of brilliant strokes all around the ground before bringing up his first hundred of the season. Chilton reached triple figures half-way through the second session, before being dismissed by a skidding Udal beauty. Partner in crime Marcus North batted well also, but failed in the 'nervous nineties' on 95. A massive 7-375 posted on the first day is what the Lancs would've dreamed of, but it is on the score, and with a strong tail, 400 plus is far from off the cards.

Christopher Benham made it to 184 before Marcus North claimed him, one of the part-timer's three wickets. James Anderson also provided 3 wickets but went for an expensive return.

Sutton to miss with sickness

Lancashire keeper Luke Sutton will miss the County Championship match against Durham starting tomorrow. Sutton, 29, has been struck by a stomach bug, and has been ruled out of selection.

Coach Michael Lonie stated that it was a big blow for the side, but it gives an opportunity to back-up keeper Gareth Cross. "Luke is a great asset to the side, and it is a shame that he has been struck with the illness, however it does give some experience to Gareth (Cross) who has been in the wilderness for some time".

Cross, 21, has played only 2 first class games for Lancashire, but his work behind the stumps is fantastic. Not known as a heavy hitter with the bat, he has quick hands and is a very enthusastic young cricketer. The inform Peter Horton will also be an inclusion to the side that drew with Hampshire last week.

County Championship (Div 1) - Durham vs Lancashire at Riverside

26 April 2006
Day 1 - Team effort gives Lancs good start

Lancashire have got off to a good start in their Championship game against Durham at Riverside. Cool knocks from Ian Sutcliffe (91) and Peter Horton (67) gave the side a boost as Chilton won the toss and elected to bat. Andrew Flintoff also made a nice contribution, just short of a half-century.

Bowled out for 329, Durham could only face one over before the light and time told the umpires it was stumps.

Australian Jimmy Maher has given Durham a good position heading into day 3, as they remain behind on runs, yet still have one wicket in hand. Maher smashed a brilliant hundred at Riverside today, in what included 11 fours and one six. Kyle Coetzer (63), Paul Collingwood (45) and South African Dale Benkenstein (43) were great throughout the middle order as Durham made 309 before stumps.

Lancashires up and coming pacemen Sajid Mahmood recorded his third five wicket haul in first class cricket, despite being expensive. His 5-101 off a marathon 31 over day included the breakthrough of Maher and Benkenstein.

Day 3 - Freddy gives Lancs a boost

As Sajid Mahmood, refreshed after a long day, came into bowl the first over, one thing was on his mind, a sixth wicket, and he claimed it on the last ball of the over, carrying him figures of 6-102, his best, and also getting Durham off the pitch in the time they would of liked.

Mark Chilton and Ian Sutcliffe showed aggression early for quick runs, and Marcus North and Andrew Flintoff also showed quick running between the wickets. Flintoff went on to record a fantastic half century and follow it up with his 16th first class hundred, as North and Chilton failed to go on. Flintoff was on 112 when the skipper declared, leaving Lancashire in a strong position to get points, as they lead by 383 runs.

Lancashire have recorded a fantastic first win of the season in the Division 1 County Championship, with a fantastic bowling display from first innings best Sajid Mahmood, and off-spinner Andrew Crook, in his first 4-day game of the season.

Mahmood claimed 3-58 following his 6-101 in the first innings, while Crook was the hero, with 5-65, his best first-class figures. Crook's season started at Old Trafford in a Challenge Cup match where he took his best one-day figures of 5-58. His figures today showed spin was needed in the side.

Durham made 202, with Maher again top scoring with 59, as Lancashire cruised to win by 181 runs. Andrew Flintoff was rewarded man of the match for his strong batting and 3 wickets.

Hodge returns for English season

Australian star batsman Brad Hodge has joined up with Lancashire for the 2006 season after returning from his tour in the sub-continent for the Bangladesh test and one-day series.

Hodge, a class act, and regular contributor during the English summer, has missed the first two championship games, however he is set to play the remaining games for the division one side.

Hodge didn't play for Australia in both forms, being dropped from the test XI, despite a test batting average of just under 60, including an unbeaten double century in his third test match in his career.

Worcester bowlers make mess of Lancs

Worcestershire have beaten Lancashire today thanks to a great bowling effort, especially from spinners Gareth Batty and Raymond Price. Batty, who was named man of the match scored 3 wickets, while the Zimbabwean did well, conceeding only 22 runs off his 9 overs, same as Batty, for 2 wickets.

Mal Loye and Mark Chilton were the only batsmen who looked comfortable against the spin, while Graham Hick and Vikram Solanki added valuable knocks in a reasonable effort against the Lancashire attack of Anderson, Flintoff and Mahmood.

County Championship (Div 1) - Lancashire vs Kent at Old Trafford

3 May 2006
Day 1 - Kent smashes Lancs as Anderson does hammy

Kent have recorded a fantastic first innings score at stumps on day 1 in their clash against Lancashire at Old Trafford. Kent finished the day on 9 for 392, with David Fulton scoring a superb century just before tea. Keeper Geraint Jones (87) and South African all-rounder Andrew Hall (77) also added spice in the middle order as the Lancashire bowlers were threatened all day.

Paceman James Anderson's day was short, going into the rooms just before tea with 2-64 after 19 overs, and didn't return, as he compalined about a hamstring strain. It is expected a minor injury, however is expected to rule him out for the game, short of a pacemen. Brad Hodge took an unexpected 3 wickets to give the Lancs some respect.

Day 4 - North and Sutcliffe give fans show

Lancashire recorded a fantastic win, showing their one day qualities thanks to opener Ian Sutcliffe and Marcus North down the order. Sutcliffe and Chilton opened with intentions to go after everything, when 253 was required with only 44 overs to play, after bowling Kent out for 264 in their second innings.

Sutcliffe's 80 was quick, 46 balls quick. It included 10 boundaries and quick running between wickets, while North's unbeaten 67 was as important and as quick. A middle order collapse, despite keeping the run rate, put North under more pressure as his eye was in from a first ball boundary. North also hit 10 boundaries off 45 balls in his match winning performance.

Robert Joseph was the unlucky bowler for Kent in the onslaught, as he went for 102 off 12 overs, claiming 2 wickets. James Anderson returned at mornings play for Lancashire and took 2 quick wickets to help get the batsmen on the crease.

Mahmood destroy Northamptonshire

Sajid Mahmood has taken a career best 5-14 against Northamptonshire, restricting them to 141 in the Challenge Trophy match at Northampton. Mahmood, an exciting prospect, has had a sensational start to the summer, taking career best figures now in both forms of the game. Steven Crook was the only man who really troubled the scorers, smashing 61 runs including 8 fours and 1 six.

Lancashire openers Mark Chilton and Ian Sutcliffe chased down the runs without losing the wicket, and giving the win to the side after a disappointment last week at Worcester. Chilton scored 73 not out, while Sutcliffe made an unbeaten 63. Both cruised their way to the finish mark, finishing in a casual 37 overs.

Lancs blow after big break

Wicket-keeper Luke Sutton has had another big blow this season, and is set to miss the next month with a broken finger. Sutton missed a Championship game earlier with an illness but returned quickly, and his absence somewhat showed.

His months absence gives Cross more experience and more ability to improve in the seniors.
