Russell to play this week.

From an un-namable source within the club, Russell will play this week.

I recieved this in an email.

You didn’t hear it from me but a certain former Carlton captain and current chairman of selectors has just told me that our number 1 pick from last year, Jordan Russell will be making his debut this week. It’s felt that he isn’t ready but like Walker last year and Houlihan many years before, sometimes they go better at the highest level…..

This is a worry for me. IMO, the selectors should do the same thing they did with Waite and let Russell develop with the Bullants.

Hope i'm wrong!!

It is abit of a worry, but it will ne nice to see where he's at and how he handles it at the top level. Good luck to him.

Would I be wrong in saying that every other top 10 pick has played this year? Possibly every other top 20 pick. Why do we always get the slow developers in comparison?

Carlton must have been reading my comments! Great news, play someone who will have a long and successful future with the Blues. Who will be dropped for him? Could be a number of players.

No.6 pick Tom Williams has not yet made his debut, nor has John Meesen who was taken with pick 8.
Fair enough. Did Williams play during the Wizard Cup? I thought I saw him somewhere.

Carlton still have slow developers compared to most other clubs. Hurts when our senior players are so poor.

I think it really shows the poor state our list is in when all we've really been talking about for weeks now is the development of our first pick (taken at 9  ) last year in Russell. I am the same, in that I've been tracking his progress all year and am anxiously awaiting his debut.

I don't think supporters of any of the other clubs would have been talking about the debut of a pick 9 (especially a lightly framed winger type) as much as we have. It just goes to show how deprived we have been in recent years of quality youth.

I can't wait for a few years, when we can just let these kids mature in the seconds, and then burst onto the scene fully fit and ready to dominate like the good ol days

Excellent news.

From seeing him once in the VFL and reading reports sounds like he's done some good jobs on small forwards. Wonder if he'll get Guerra this week.

Yeh I know he had surgery, but that was about round 10 and his form in the VFL was not great. Had he not been injured, it is unlikely that he would be in the team anyway.

The dogs have said Williams would be playing AFL now if not injured.

Would I be right in saying Russell's VFL hasnt been outstanding? The impression I was getting from a blues mate in Melb is that he was well off the pace.

Russell has been playing in defence in the VFL. Has not stood out but has looked likely. You don't tend to get a lot of the ball back there. Can beat his man and has decent skills and pace. Maybe he will do a Bryan and look better at AFL level.

Lets hope so.

dont mean to be negative, but the kid hasn't even looked up to it in the VFL.

He's been solid in the two's rather than dominating. He needs to improve his attack on the ball and put himself in a position to use his pace and excellent skills more often if he's to become a star and really take hold of a game, but as a defensive half-back flanker he's been doing the job week in and week out.

I'll say this about him, at least he can hit a target. Which is more than I can say for half of his teammates.

IIRC, wasnt the biggest query over him pre-draft his kicking?
