Interesting line in The Age yesterday from FFA Chief Executive Ben Buckley:

Buckley flagged the introduction of a national youth league for next season, with the clubs linked to A-League sides

Surely such a move would send the AFL into hysterics. Soccer is the AFL's biggest concern - any form of junior competition from a rival sport would concern them greatly. Could we possibly see the AFL adopt something similar - such as a 10 or 12 week interstate competition from 2009 onwards? The AFL are already moving in the direction of expanding the U16 and U18 National Carnivals.

I suspect some big changes on the cards in the AFL beyond this year - perhaps even the abolishment of the TAC Cup.

we're the eagles, the west coast eagles and we're here to show you why.

for years they took the best of us....

We're not worried about AFL. They're no threat to us. We're FIFA. We're football.
Please take Carlton off your team you are an absoloute dick... Soccer doesn't have to be worried it's already the number one sport in such illustrious countries such as Mozambique, El Salvador and Serbia.. Really global powerhouses there

Also, England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia...

ignore the fact that you didnt put in real global powerhouses and you got a real arguement, bluegene!

To answer the OP question, The A-League is not a threat to the AFL because they are played seperate times of the year it would be like comparing Sheffield Shield or ING cup whatever it's called these days to AFL Football. A-League is only relatively succesful because it has no serious competition during Summer

Interesting to see in the ALPHA magazine on the weekend with the John Aloisi interview that Spider Everit said that the A-league was catching up to the AFL. Spider then went on to ask why there season was so short. Aloisi then said 'so it doesn't clash with the AFL season'. However though give the A-League 10-20 years then I believe that we will be a very respected competition throughout the world. The standard of soccer will be vastly better during this time.

If we want the domestic league to succeed, we don't want to pick fights that are unnecessary. If the A-League does fail, it will be disappointing, but ultimately inconsequential.

Come on. Australia isn't very important. If we lose it, it's not like world football is going to collapse around us.
Where the hell have you gotten the perception that Footy is trying to overtake Soccer world-wide you have got to be the most delusional poster I've ever seen

Oh, I'm not under that impression, AFL fans are. They've gotten this idea that Australia is the centre of the universe, and that if they beat football here they beat it everywhere and AFL will become the most popular sport in the world.

In Australia soccer will never become bigger than footy unless the A League can draw big name European/South American players, which I can't see happening.

What do you mean by picking fights that are unnecessary Frederick. That comment left me a bit baffled!

Why go up against the AFL when we don't have to?

Why not? In our third year, Melbourne signed a Costa Rican international.

Hardly.

As long as you're brought up in the culture of a game, and you are good enough, you'll stick with it.

We believe that football has enough appeal to make an impact on the Australian sporting landscape. Children play it because their mothers like the relative lack of violence, and teenagers like it because it leads to money.

And then when they get to their mid-teens they start converting to AFL because they realise the chances of them emulating Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka, Tim Cahill etc are very limited. On the other hand with AFL lists combined totalling approximately 700 players, the odds of getting on to an AFL list are far greater.

That's why we have the A-LEAGUE. And the YOUTH LEAGUE.

and what would young kids want to play in
the A-League
or the AFL
come back with an unbiast opinion and about 75% would say AFL
and 20% would say the Domestic Cricket league.
