It wasn't a massive upset. Burton was one of the favourites going in. He was ranked number 1 himself up until late March this year. and had been on and off since 2012. If you do more regattas than someone else you will get more points and be ranked higher. So it's not always a true indication...

Neither of them had good starts and Kostides might have crossed the start line first, but Slingsby was always in a controlling position, due to the pre start. Slingsby also tacked right on his line all the way up the first beat which forced him out to the right.
Kostides didn't have a choice. Slingsby sat on him in the pre start and wasnt going to let him out of sight. Kostides had to try something and had to try and get separation but Slingsby was always in a controlling position.
Slingsby said in an interview that he didnt give him an inch, however...
