5 Games in and where do we stand?

So we're 5 games in and I for one am pleased by what I'm seeing. We attack as well as defend now, we run and share the ball and we're playing kids when we can to see what they can bring. General observations (in no order of importance): We've found a couple...Krueger and Lipinski are both handy...

    Well done Maddie Brown

Sad to see you hanging up the bib Maddie but you've been an ornament to the game and I'm so glad you chose to finish off your career with my beloved Pies! Hope we keep you on in some capacity and that your GAP year brings you back to us safe and sound. Premiership with the Vixens, Commonwealth...

    Vale Terry Waters

Another of those mighty '60s and '70's teams has gone. TW was a rock as a player, he had the courage of five men and he played for his mates. A captain, a Mr Fix It type player trusted by his coach to compete wherever he was needed. Good on you Tezz.

    Footy Quiz...?

Thought it might be fun in a diversional kind of way if we posed a question or two a day and then tried to work them out... Here's mine for today but feel free to join in cos I've got limited abilities in these matters! Q: What do Peter Patterson, Ricky Watt, Thorald Merrett and Tom Phillips...

"I was pretty much legally blind"

So he had a detached retina in one eye already....maybe that might have been why he was misjudging marking contests before the final blow? Mason Cox is one pretty tough dude. https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-10-18/i-was-pretty-much-legally-blind-oneeyed-pie-on-the-mend

    Polly Farmer...Absolute Legend.

Sad to hear of the death of one of the games TRUE legends. Polly was a magnificent player, a true innovator and visionary in the way he played the game. A magnificent body player, superbly skilled in all aspects of the sport, he revolutionised ruck play and handball in general. Vale Poll.

    Thankyou Daniel Harford

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/no-idea-what-she-was-saying-harford-hits-back-at-sheahan-20180220-p4z0xo.html It's about time someone took a slap at the Sheahan's of this world. And this after CFC gave her the chance to get a foot in the door at a footy club Thanks Daniel.

VALE Drew Morphett, another good one gone.

Sad to hear of the passing of another really good man. Drew really loved his work and it showed in his professionalism and his quality of commentary. Never a wasted word. RIP "Morpho".

Unbiased Sports Opinions in the media.

If you haven't already done so, give this website a look: http://sportshounds.com.au/ It's lots of the old journos from the 80's doing a free webpage on all sorts of sports. Ron Reed's there, Lawrence Money's Boot in Mouth is back as well as Jeff Hook and Scott Palmer. Should be some...

    Vale: Maxy "Tangles" Walker

A great bloke has passed today. Tangles was old school....he played VFL footy and Test cricket for his country. He had a heart bigger than Texas and was always generous and caring of others. He had a great sense of humour and a huge grin all the time. Well played Big fella.

    Manipulating Rotations = Injuries

The AFL must be so proud....just about every team has team crippling injury lists and its only round 6. I'm not one that subscribes to injuries being "manageable" since some (read ACL's and fractures) just aren't but the reduction in interchange rotations coupled with new rule changes designed...

    The biggest challenge?

Max Gawn had 63 hit outs against Goldstein last round, how many could he have this week? Our mids better start roving to the opposition's ruckman QUICKLY!

Tim Boyle and some quality (thoughtful) AFL Journalism

If you have the time Robbo (and anyone else who wants to rant about silly stuff) have a read of this article by Tim Boyle (amazingly enough an actual ex AFL player who might know what he's actually talking about!)...

    Using the media

When I saw Wayne Carey's slap at Hawthorn's aging warriors last week I thought...."Oh god...Hodgey's gonna take that out on someone"...so it was no surprise that the old boys (Hodge, Mitchell, Burgoyne, Lewis) destroyed the Crows last weekend. Later in the week I saw Bomber Thompson interviewed...

    Depth players

You read this term so often, but how hard must it be to be labelled one or considered one by your club? Opportunities are given to others who do the same amount of training and make the same amount of sacrifices....yet the depth player just has to wait for an injury before they get a chance to...

    Can I have your tickets?

Now that the season is officially over for so many of you...I was just wondering if I could have your tickets? You won't be needing them...going along to watch a pack of losers and such....and I have a bunch of underpriviledged kids down here in Geelong that would love to go and watch a game...

Roast Mike Sheahan loves the Pies.....NOT

Just had a look at Sheahan's best teams of the decades 60's to 2009....and whilst I can appreciate that all clubs would arc up about his decisions....try these for a couple of bloopers: Collingwood made GF's twice in the 60's and finals most years....yet Geelong have 5 players in the 60's team...

How would it have been if:

Was just in the Jessie White comparison thread and it dawned on me....how would Gavin Brown have been if he'd had Jessie White's physique? 100 goal a year full forward? A giant midfielder? the most imposing player of all time? Go crazy folks, propose your favourite "How would it have beens"

    Dump the Sub

With Adam Goodes shunning the green vest and saying he'd prefer to play ressies footy rather than wear it....can the AFL finally see it for what it is: An outdated, anachronistic insult of a rule that does nothing but frustrate the game and it's participants? People will try to point out that...

    Analysis "Players Hitting Targets"

Are we over analysing this particular skill or indeed "putting the cart before the horse". Watch any of the elite kicking sides (Hawks, Cats, Dockers) and you see the skill broken down into two basic contexts. They either kick the ball 15-20m to an oncoming player or they pump it 40-50m quickly...

    Recruiters and BF

With the likes of Knighter and Snoop (et al) on this board and I'm assuming similar folk on opposition boards does anyone think that clubs recruiting staff might scan sites like this for whispers? The way that Bontempelli went from "our smokey" to a top 4 pick last year and just out of our reach...

    Player managers: discuss.

With all the contracted players coming out requesting trades one wonders where they are getting their advice? Maybe each club could have one manager for all their players....that'd fix em! So....are they blood sucking leeches or failed real estate agents? What's your opinion on where player...

    RIP Robbie Flower

I know he wasn't a Magpie but none that saw him play could ever have felt anything but respect for one of the greatest wingers ever to play the game. Small and light he was absolutely fearless on the footy field and his skills were outstanding. He played in an era of great wingmen (Grieg...

When did players become "our" livestock?

A young man goes to his boss and says he wants a transfer back to his home state so that he can be closer to his sick dad. The boss realises the seriousness of the young man's claims and accepts (if reluctantly) that the move needs to be made. After all the young man has given the company 6...

    Injuries in finals

Anyone else notice how important injuries have been in this year's finals? Geelong have no ruck men due to injury, Freo hamstrung due to injuries to KPD's and Ballantyne. How come injuries are so important to finals teams and yet are no excuse during the home and away? (tongue firmly planted in...

    Monkey on open Mike

Listening to Monkey tonight is just so good. He's still that great big loveable country boy he was when he first came to the club. He's a "Scallywag"...love the bloke. Isn't it great to hear someone speak about footy and not resort to spin?

    Perspective

Tonight has been a terrible night for the Cats, but in essence it merely puts a full stop on their disastrous season. The season started badly when young gun Josh Caddy broke a hand in the NAB cup. He would miss the next 10 weeks. Harry Taylor then pulled a calf muscle in the next practice match...
