Fitzroy's crappest player

Remove this Banner Ad

this thread has certainly cracked me up. a lot of names half-forgotten....

Man we had some duds over the years - you think they are going to be the next big thing... and years later the names end up here.

actually as an extention to this conversation... who was the crappest player who really loved playing for the Roy. who were really proud to wear the maroon and blue (maybe childhood dream, family connection etc) but who in the end didn't cut the mustard as they say...

Michael Coates seemed to get a lot of games considering his father George was Chairman of Selectors during the early 80's.

Crappy players well John Frazer kicked 9 in one game and that was it played 78-79 6 games, Jamie Shaw was unlucky Perty jumped on his foot in his first practice match and broke it,
Peter Castles from Tassie.
Steve Newman from Essendon, Erich Munch from North, Graeme Williamson, Darren Murphy along with Craig McGrath were champions from our under 19's under Doug Searl.
David Noble bloody useless, Tim Rendell not much chop.
Danny Sexton another went to the VFA became a goodun, there was a guy from around Wagga Barry ? was bloody useless told his missus one day and she cried.
We were like England and took in Asylum Seekers, or someone we felt sorry for.

I forgot about that David Noble! You're right, he didn't do much, did he?

Former Under 19's captain, Frank Bizzotto always looked very proud to be a Royboy.

Mick Dwyer apparently barracked for Fitzroy as a kid. When he finally joined the Roys, he was hopeless, but he'd been a good player for St Kilda & actually represented Victoria.

Some of the guys mentioned in this thread might have been dud players, but they were also good blokes.

David O'Connell saw me in Richmond one lunchtime & yelled "G'Day" across the street to me, because he recognised me as a Roys supporter Aren't the supporters supposed to yell "G'Day" to the players???

I was walking along Royal Parade, after a match at the oval, formerly known as Princes Park, when Danny Sexton drove past & offered me a lift in his beat-up old Cortina.

Yeah Barry Suckling, I had just remembered, but as usual FP got in first, also David Noble was related to our Chairman of Selectors Max Kelleher, bloody Taswegians.
Big Fell Mark Scott good drinker played some gooduns but not much.
That full back who went to Box Hill became a goodun there, originally from Hawthorn, help FP.Roger Delaney, Chris Duthie Keith Thomas couldnt anyone from SA play, Keiran Sporn good bloke but we got the wrong end of the career.

Yeah Exell, not hi fault though, Osborne poked him in the eye and his future was plumb-buggered after that.

Still, the bloke kicked 25 goals against Murchison a few years ago for Stanhope ( he's back there now, as a playing coach, aged 38).

this will cause some contraversy....

there was a bloke who used to sit next to me at the junction when I was a kid who thought Noel Mugavin was a hack.

His enthusiasm was often let down by his skills.

by the way - the bloke who sat next to me who thought he was a hack was my Dad.....

My definition of a dud is someone who keeps getting a game despite constant demonstrations that he's not 'up to it'. Usually a forward - hence the names of Hogg and Excell ( the human spreadsheet ) must be mentioned.

Besides our horror run with interstate full backs, the No. 2 always seemed to be jinxed. I think Carl Delina and Keith Thomas carried that heavy load.

Dale Kickett fizzled badly and then there's David Donato , taken instead of Jason McCartney. What was going on there ?

Someone asked who the hell is Brendan Klaebe earlier in the thread.
Klaebe was a defender from Sturt recruited in the mid to late 80s.
Struggled at AFL level and I'm not sure if he played for Sturt again.

As said earlier the biggest dud was Brad Edwards bloody useless, and ended up at the Bears another one we had David Crutchfield school boy champion, played what one maybe two games, then went to Queensland and won the Grogan Medal for best in Qld.

Little correction on Brenton Klaebe- He Played for Norwood(50 odd games i think) and played 5 games for the Roys in 91- not sure if he played for the legs in 92 but i know he didn't play for Norwood in 93- he played in a Port v Norwood legends game in 99 and he had stacked a pound or 2 on by then.
