Is there a reason there is a discount on Academy players? The compensation for developing them would be the fact that they get auto access to the player.
Helps to offset the discount that heartland clubs get when they pillage Northern clubs for players.
Which is paid for by the AFL....

A discount on something you invested 0 dollars into is a hell of a deal
You just made this rubbish up. Clubs do contribute $'s. Source:

Interesting to hear that Harley Reid turns 19 in April. If the rules allowed he could have been drafted last year and still played all but 1 or 2 games as an 18 yr old. Be good if they could go back to allowing 17 yr Olds to be drafted especially if they turn 18 at the start of the next season.

Why would it be good?

Let them focus on their education before entering the AFL system.

Probably because there is a discount on FS players.

FS should attract penalties if anything, 125% of the bid for example.

Academy players probably get the discount to encourage their clubs to take the local player over another. Which makes sense for a line-ball call in the third round, but not for Jed Walter.

Why? The F/S rule may be a bit of a gimmick but it is unique to our sport and worth preserving IMO.

Penalising clubs for investing in bloodlines would be a bad move IMO. It would bring about the death of the rule, if that's the aim then just scrap it and be done with it.

Being unique is a negative not a positive

It shows your actions are not all that intelligent or logical. Its why it isnt worth repeating

who's winning?

GC by a mile and its not even close.

Nth missed out big time on Reid, WC missed out big time on Curtin.

I hope WC can hold onto Reid because the draft is to compromised as it is, we can't have teams not taking blokes because they might go home.

How did north miss our big time? Price was ridiculous and there isn’t much between Reid and McKercher. They then added Durrsma plus talls.

Reid will be a once in a generation type talent, they type of bloke like a Trac/Dusty who helps get the top end talent on a list to a flag from being pure X factor.

He might be everyone said the same about Rayner too. McKercher is just as good just you wait. Plus they still had 3,15,17,18 in hand. To get Reid they’d be giving most of those away. North walk away as the second biggest winners behind GC

Yeah, but Cats wanted O'Sullivan so they wouldn't have gone back any further. They were never trading that pick with anyone else.

Bombers fell for it hook, line and stinker.
Geelong could of been 'bluffing', but how could Essendon know that for certain? Obviously we wanted Caddy as a priority, and weren't willing to take any risks that Geelong would take him, or another team trading up.

"fell for it" :D

I just love the zero sum mentality AFL fans have. Can't wrap the old noggin around the possibility that it's not always about winning and losing trades. This outcome is as win/win as it gets.

I am fine that you think this, by the way, but as an Essendon supporter (who despises Dodo) I couldn't be happier with the way it panned out and the fact we actually finally ****ing did something rather than watch other clubs be proactive to address their needs.

Don't expect any support for that view here and wouldn't expect anything else, but for me it's happy days! Such a great result.

Why?

What on earth are you talking about?
Basic principles show that a one off idea that isnt repeated is normally not repeated for 1 or 2 reasons

1. Its copyrighted
2. Its a dumb idea

This one is a dumb idea so NBA/NFL wont do it. NBA have perfect case to do it with Bronny James coming in but they aint dumb enough to make the change due to integrity reasons

I don't think never trading with anyone else is quite accurate. WC had their future first on the table apparently. EFC did what they had to. Like I said, genuine win/win

With Essendon unsuccessful in their bid to trade up with the Giants, they turned their attention to their next target in Nate Caddy, the key forward boasting an abundance of aggression and power. The Cats were keen on key defender Connor O'Sullivan, but the Dons still needed to get up to secure Caddy.

West Coast kept its future first on the table after Curtin was gone, with Caddy in their sights. It was a tempting prize for the Cats, but their list retool called for an immediate influx of talent which the Bombers could aid.

Pick 31 was all the sweetener Geelong needed to trade down one spot. Caddy was a Don, and country boy O'Sullivan was a Cat. Neither player had a clue the trade was coming, but neither cared how they became AFL players.

"We thought long and hard about not doing it, but that pick 31 we secured in that trade was important to us," veteran recruiter Stephen Wells told ESPN.

I love the NBA but they have zero relevance to the discussion. Could not give a shit whether they do or do not have the F/S rule and it is a massive stretch to say it is dumb because they don't.

They do a lot right but some of their rules are bat shit crazy too. Let's not pretend we need to copy Americans with everything; we don't.
